Connect & Thrive: a Wellbeing Programme for Migrants in NZ is currently under design in collaboration with migrant community groups in Queenstown.
Migrants face unique challenges when moving to another country, including language and communication barriers, social isolation and loss of their support network, and immigration and other administrative and legal challenges. Many skilled migrants accept jobs below their skill level while locally relevant experience or qualifications.
A Headlight focus workshop with migrant community leaders in Dec 2023 showed that knowing how to look after self and others, and where/ how to seek help was poorly understood.
The Migrant Wellbeing Programme is about wellbeing, in the framework of culture shock and the unique challenges faced by migrants new to the country. It offers practical resources and tools so that people can proactively look after their own wellbeing, and that of their friends and family.
It is designed for delivery on a digital platform, which empowers community leaders and peers to host and deliver the programme within their own community. It also enables people to anonymously share their stories and experiences as well as in person; and supports participants who are not confident speaking in public.
Connect & Thrive: a Wellbeing Programme for Migrants in NZ will be offered free to migrant community groups from May 2026, and can be run within community regularly.

“We look forward to supporting Headlight to deliver ongoing workshops for the migrant/ethnic communities and work closely with migrant leaders to develop and expand their service provision to build resilience and mental wellbeing for the wider migrant community. They have become one of the key organisations to support migrants in the district. ”
